New Treatment for Addictions Are Proving Their Worth

One of those uses researchers are looking at is to stimulate the brain to reduce or eliminate the craving for an addictive substance.

Joining Narcan in 2004 as a treatment option is Campral, which has been approved specifically as a craving reducer for alcoholics.

These stunning breakthroughs work to eliminate cravings by stimulating the pleasure centers in the brain, but without producing the numbing effect that alcohol has on someone who is drinking.

These drugs fall into the same general category of the breakthrough drug Chantrix, which is used to help people stop smoking.

Chantrix has been approved by regulators for just this purpose. After taking the drug, the pleasure of smoking vanishes – it just isn’t there. Smokers experience a cigarette as if they were puffing on an empty chamber. With no pleasure derived from the cigarette, it is futile to light one up, which makes it much easier to quit.

Researchers at University of California, Los Angeles found methamphetamine addicts treated with Naltrexone had reduced cravings for their substance of choice. “The results were about as good as you could hope for,” NewsMedical reported UCLA associate professor of psychology Lara Ray as saying. Ray is also the director of the UCLA Addictions Laboratory and lead author of a study published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacolog.

Ray said the results indicated that Naltrexone reduced the rewarding effects of the drug — those taking Naltrexone did not find methamphetamine to be as pleasurable and were much less likely to want more of it,” NewsMedical reported.

On another level, rehabilitation centers report that patients are more likely than ever to view addiction as a medical issue, as opposed to one defined as a character flaw. With the removal or all of some of the stigma attached to their addiction, addicts are now quicker to admit they have a problem and to ask for assistance kicking their addiction.

When the Food and Drug Administration approves of a new treatment for addiction, this adds to the growing trend towards defining an addiction as a disease.
